Why do I need this medicine?

Ethinylestradiol and Gestodene are combined together in this medicine.

Ethinylestradiol + Gestodene is an oral contraceptive (birth control pill). It is used to prevent pregnancy.

This medicine may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.

How do I take this medicine?

Take Ethinylestradol + Gestodene exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Try to take it at the same time each day.

What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

Do not double dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • blood clot disorder or at risk of having a blood clot disorder e.g. prolonged immobilisation, family history, very high blood pressure, high levels of cholesterol and fats in the blood, smoking, diabetes, migraine, increased age (>35 years old)
  • heart disease e.g. stroke, heart attack, chest pain
  • liver disease e.g. liver tumours, hepatitis (liver infection)
  • sex-hormone sensitive cancers e.g. cancer of the breast or endometrium (lining of the uterus or womb)
  • undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
as this medicine may not be suitable for you.

Do not take Ethinylestradiol + Gestodene if you are pregnant or suspected to be pregnant. If you become pregnant while being treated with this medicine, alert your doctor immediately. This medicine may cause harm to your unborn child.

What should I take note of while taking this medicine?

Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  •  systemic lupus erythematosus (autoimmune disease that causes inflammation)
  • history of depression
  • diabetes
  • inflammation of the bowel
  • undiagnosed breast mass
Let your doctor know if you are breastfeeding.

This medicine will not protect you against sexually transmitted diseases.

Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.

What side effects could I experience?

Ethinylestradiol + Gestodene may make you feel dizzy. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Other side effects may include any of the following: headache, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, acne, vaginal thrush, changes in weight, changes in mood, decreased sex drive, spotting or bleeding between periods, and breast pain and tenderness.

Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.

Can I take this with other medicines?

Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
  • medicines for epilepsy (fits or seizures) e.g. phenytoin, carbamazepine, phenobarbital
  • medicines for tuberculosis or TB e.g. rifampicin, rifabutin
  • cholesterol-lowering medicines e.g. atorvastatin
  • medicines for fungal infection e.g. ketoconazole, itraconazole, fluconazole
  • medicines for HIV infection e.g. ritonavir
  • certain antibiotics e.g. penicillin, tetracyclines, chloramphenicol
  • herbal medicine e.g. St.John’s Wort (herbal medicine)
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Ethinylestradiol + Gestodene.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.

What special dietary instructions should I follow?

Avoid alcohol.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
