Why do I need this medicine?

Flupentixol is used to treat mood and behavioural changes in conditions such as schizophrenia (an illness that causes changes in perception, thoughts and behaviour) and other psychoses.

How do I take this medicine?

Take Flupentixol exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

You may take this medicine with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.

Flupentixol must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed otherwise, as stopping it suddenly could worsen your condition.

What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.

When should I not use this medicine?

Flupentixol is not suitable for patients with dementia-related psychosis.

Alert your doctor if you are experiencing emotional states of excitability, agitation or overactivity as Flupentixol may not be suitable for you.

What should I take note of while taking this medicine?

Inform your doctor if you have:

- an enlarged prostate or difficulty urinating
- patients at risk of fits such as those with a history of fits, head injury or alcoholism
- Parkinson's disease
- narrow-angle glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye)
- liver, kidney or heart disease
- lung disease
- myasthenia gravis (a condition that causes muscle weakness)
- thyroid problems
- diabetes
- breast cancer or tumours dependent on a hormone known as prolactin
- blood disorders (diseases of the blood with a reduced number of red or white blood cells or platelets)
- adrenal gland tumour called phaeochromocytoma
- risk factors for blood clots
- suicidal thoughts

Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Flupentixol may impair the ability of your body to adjust to temperature changes in the environment. Avoid exposure to very cold or very hot environments.

If you are going for an operation, including minor operations and dental work, inform your doctor or dentist that you are taking this medicine.


What side effects could I experience?

Flupentixol may make you drowsy or dizzy. If affected, do not drive or operate machinery if you are affected.

Flupentixol may also make you dizzy when you get up from a sitting or lying down position; to minimise this problem, stand up slowly. Inform your doctor if these side effects become severe or refuse to go away.

Some common side effects with Flupentixol include difficulty urinating, difficulty sleeping, restlessness, tiredness, tremor, visual disturbances, dry mouth, stomach discomfort, vomiting, increased appetite and weight gain. You may also notice that your skin becomes more sensitive to sunlight. Apply sunscreen when going outdoors and avoid direct or prolonged exposure to sunlight and UV lamps.

Other side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following:

- confusion and hallucinations (seeing, hearing or feeling things that are not existent)
- unusual changes in mood or behaviour (being aggressive, agitated, or having compulsive and impulsive behaviour)
- fast or irregular heartbeat

Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.

Can I take this with other medicines?

Inform your doctor and your pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:

- medicines for heart disease e.g. quinidine, procainamide, digoxin
- medicines for mood disorders e.g. lithium, imipramine
- other antipsychotics e.g. thioridazine, clozapine, haloperidol
- certain antibiotics e.g. erythromycin, moxifloxacin
- medicines used to treat Parkinson's disease e.g. levodopa
- medicines for epilepsy (fits) e.g. carbamazepine
- medicines for allergy e.g. antihistamines
- cisapride (a gastric medicine)

This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Flupentixol.

Always notify your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicine, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.

What special dietary instructions should I follow?

Avoid alcohol.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
