Why do I need this medicine?

Hydrocodone is used to relieve severe pain.

How do I take this medicine?

Take Hydrocodone exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Try to take it at the same time each day.

This medicine is available as an oral tablet and as a syrup.

If you are taking the modified-release/sustain-release/chrono-release type of tablet (usually labeled as “XL”, “ER”), swallow it whole. Do not divide, chew or crush the tablet.

If you are taking the syrup, shake the bottle well before you take it to ensure that the liquid is evenly mixed. Use the measuring spoon or cup provided to measure your dose.

What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose to make up for a missed dose.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • asthma or other breathing problems
  • bowel obstruction
as this medicine may not be suitable for you.

What should I take note of while taking this medicine?

Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • liver disease 
  • kidney disease
  • heart disease e.g. heart failure, slow heart rate
  • adrenal gland disorder
  • head injury or trauma, brain tumours, increased pressure in the brain
  • seizures
  • gallbladder disease
  • inflammation of the pancreas
  • enlarged prostate
  • low blood pressure
  • mental illness e.g. depression, anxiety
  • obesity
  • breathing problems during sleep
  • thyroid disorder
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving this medicine to children, elderly, or debilitated patients.

Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition e.g. pain relief, mental status, blood pressure, signs of misuse and abuse.

What side effects could I experience?

This medicine may make you drowsy or dizzy. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Other side effects may include the following: constipation, nausea, headache, dry mouth, vomiting, rash, and abdominal pain.

Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.

Can I take this with other medicines?

Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
  • certain antibiotics e.g. erythromycin
  • medicines for fungal infection e.g. ketoconazole
  • medicines for HIV infection e.g. ritonavir
  • medicines for epilepsy (fits or seizures) e.g. carbamzepine, phenytoin
  • medicines for difficulty sleeping and anxiety e.g. zolpidem, midazolam
  • medicines for depression e.g. amitriptyline, nortriptyline
  • muscle relaxants e.g. tizanidine
  • diuretics or “water pills” e.g. furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Hydrocodone.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.

What special dietary instructions should I follow?

Avoid alcohol.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from children. Protect from light.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
