Why do I need this medicine?

Methotrexate is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis (joint pain and swelling disorder) and psoriasis (red, itchy and scaly skin disease).

Methotrexate may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.

How do I take this medicine?

Take Methotrexate exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Take this medicine on an empty stomach.This medicine is usually taken once a week. Try to take it on the same scheduled time of intake.

Methotrexate must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by the doctor.

What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, inform your doctor or pharmacist.

When should I not use this medicine?

Do not take Methotrexate if you have a history of allergic reactions (swollen eyes or mouth, difficulty breathing, rashes) to this medicine.

Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant or planning to have a baby soon. If you become pregnant while being treated with Methotrexate, alert your doctor immediately. This medicine may cause harm to your unborn child. You must use proven contraception while taking Methotrexate.

Do not breastfeed while you are being treated with Methotrexate.

Alert your doctor if you have any of the following conditions:

- liver disease
- alcoholism (alcohol abuse/dependence)
- blood disorder
- immune system disorder
as this medicine may not be suitable for you.

What should I take note of while taking this medicine?

Inform your doctor if you have any of the following conditions:

- kidney disease
- stomach ulcer
- inflammatory disease of the intestines or bowel
- fluid build-up around the lung or in the abdominal cavity

For as long as you are taking Methotrexate, you will need to have regular blood tests to make sure that your blood counts, kidney and liver function are normal. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests. Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.

What side effects could I experience?

Methotrexate may cause dizziness. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Other side effects include any of the following: headache, burning sensation of the skin, rash, hair loss, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, and mouth ulcers.

This medicine may cause oversensitivity of the skin to light. Avoid direct or prolonged exposure to sunlight or UV lamps.

Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:

- unusual bleeding or bruising
- signs of infection e.g. fever, chills, sore throat
- yellowing of the skin or eyes
- dry cough (symptom of methotrexate-induced lung disease)

Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.

Can I take this with other medicines?

Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:

- medicines for bacterial infections e.g. chlorampenicol, ciprofloxacin, co-trimoxazole, penicillin, tetracycline
- medicines for pain and inflammation e.g. azapropazone, diclofenac, ibuprofen, indometacin, ketoprofen, phenylbutazone
- medicines for stomach disorder e.g. esomeprazole, omeprazole, pantoprazole
- medicines for blood clotting e.g. aspirin
- medicines for epilepsy e.g. phenytoin
- medicines for cancer e.g. cisplatin, fluorouracil
- other medicines such as nitrous oxide, probenecid, retinoids, inactivated or live vaccines

This does not include all medicines that may interact with Methotrexate.

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements (e.g. folic acid or vitamin preparations containing folic acid) and medicines that you buy without a prescription.

What special dietary instructions should I follow?

Avoid alcohol.

Avoid excessive consumption of milk rich foods.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
