Why do I need this medicine?

Mupirocin is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial skin infections.

How do I use this medicine?

Apply Mupirocin exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not apply more or less than instructed by your doctor.

This medicine is available as a cream or as an ointment.

To apply the topical cream or ointment, follow these steps:
  1. Wash and dry your hands before applying this medicine.
  2. Using a clean cotton wool pad or gauze swab, apply a small amount of Mupirocin gently to the affected area of your skin until it disappears.
  3. You may cover the treated area with a plaster or other suitable dressing, unless your doctor instructed you to leave it uncovered.
  4. Wash your hands after application.
  5. Replace the cap of the tube.
Mupirocin must be used regularly for the entire duration of treatment. Do not stop using it unless instructed by your doctor. You must complete the entire course of this medicine. If you don’t, the infection will not be properly controlled.

What should I do if I have forgotten to use this medicine?

Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose to make up for the missed dose.

If you often forget to apply your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.

When should I not use this medicine?

Do not use Mupirocin if you ever had an allergic reaction (rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to this medicine or any of its ingredients.

Avoid any contact of this medicine with your eyes. If an accidental contact occurs, rinse it immediately with water. Alert your doctor if you start to have any problems with your eyes.

This medicine is not recommended for the treatment of pressure sores (damaged skin caused by staying in one position for too long such as to those who are bedridden or on a wheelchair).

Maintain good hygiene and always wash your hands to decrease the spread of infection.

What side effects could I experience?

Mupirocin may cause any of the following side effects: headache, nausea, skin irritation such as itching, redness, pain or soreness, swelling, dryness, and burning, stinging or tingling sensation on the application site.
