Why do I need this medicine?

Octreotide is used to treat acromegaly (high growth hormone level in the blood).

It is also used to control symptoms such as diarrhoea and flushing caused by tumours of the digestive system.

Octreotide may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.

How do I use this medicine?

Octreotide is available as a solution in single-dose or multi-dose vials or as a powder for suspension.

Octreotide suspension is to be injected intramuscularly (into the muscle) while the solution is to be injected intravenously (into the vein) or subcutaneously (into the fatty layer under the skin, usually in the thigh, abdomen area or upper arm).

When given intramuscularly or intravenously, your doctor or nurse will administer the injection for you.

When you are using the subcutaneous injection, you or your caregiver may do the administration after being trained by your doctor or nurse.

Use Octreotide exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Remember to rotate the injection sites. Do not inject into the same area all the time. New injection sites should be at least 1.5 inches away from the previous injection site. Do not inject within a 1-inch radius of the navel (belly button).

The dose, route and schedule of administration of this medicine will be decided by your doctor.

Octreotide must be used regularly for it to be effective. Continue using Octreotide even when you feel better. Do not stop using it unless instructed otherwise, as stopping it suddenly could worsen your condition.

What should I do if I have forgotten to use this medicine?

If you are given the intramuscular or intravenous injection, ensure that you keep all appointments with your doctor so that you do not miss any doses. Your doctor also needs to regularly monitor your response to Octreotide.

If you miss an appointment or miss an injection, alert your doctor or nurse. A replacement appointment or injection should be given as soon as possible.

If you are using the subcutaneous injection, use the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to use your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.

What should I take note of while using this medicine?

Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • diabetes
  • heart disease
  • liver disease
  • kidney disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly. For as long as you are taking Octreotide, you may need to have regular blood tests (e.g. hormone level tests, glucose tests). Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have blood tests.

What side effects could I experience?

Octreotide may cause any of the following side effects: gallstones (abnormal stone-like mass formation in the gall bladder), diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain, nausea, stomach wind, shortness of breath, headache, dizziness, slow heartbeat, itch, rash, hair loss, pain at injection site, vomiting and weakness.

Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.

Can I use this with other medicines?

  • ciclosporin (medicine used in organ transplant or certain immune disorders)
  • cimetidine (medicine to neutralize stomach acid)
  • bromocriptine (medicine to treat high levels of a substance called prolactin)
