Why do I need this medicine?

Pseudoephedrine is used to treat nose stuffiness. It relieves the symptoms of a blocked nose and blocked sinuses to help you breathe more easily.

How do I take this medicine?

Take Pseudoephedrine exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

You may take it with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.

Pseudoephedrine is available as a tablet or oral liquid.

If you are taking the extended-release type of tablet (usually labelled “ER”), swallow it whole. Do not divide, chew or crush the tablet.

If you are taking an oral syrup, shake the bottle well before you take it to ensure that the liquid is evenly mixed. Use the measuring spoon or cup provided to measure your dose.

You may stop taking this medicine once you feel better or if there are no more allergies.

What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • heart disease
  • high blood pressure
  • severe kidney disease
  • increased pressure in the eyes
  • thyroid disease
  • diabetes
  • bladder problems e.g. difficulty urinating, enlarged prostate
as Pseudoephedrine may not be suitable for you.

Do not take Pseudoephedrine if you are currently taking or have taken a medicine used to treat depression known as monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) in the last 14 days. Please see the section “Can I take this with other medicines?” below for more information. Do not give this medicine to children below 12 years old unless instructed to do so by the doctor.

What should I take note of while taking this medicine?

Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Be sure to check with our doctor or pharmacist before giving Pseudoephedrine to a children or elderly people. Children and the elderly may be more sensitive to the side effects.

What side effects could I experience?

Pseudoephedrine may cause dizziness or drowsiness. If affected do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Other side effects of include any of the following: excitability, nervousness, dry mouth, anxiety, difficulty sleeping, headache, vomiting, nausea, restlessness, difficulty urinating and rash.

Inform your doctor if symptoms do not improve within 7 days or are accompanied by fever.

Can I take this with other medicines?

Do not take Pseudoephedrine if you are currently taking or have tken a medicine used to treat depression known as a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxacid, phenelzine and tranylcypromine in the last 14 days.

Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
  • other medicines for cold or allergy e.g. azelastine
  • medicines for high blood pressure or heart disease e.g. digoxin, propranolol, methyldopa, reserpine
  • medicines for depression e.g. amitriptyline
  • medicines for migraine e.g. ergotamine
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Pseudoephedrine.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.

What special dietary instructions should I follow?

Avoid alcohol.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
