Why do I need this medicine?

Sucroferric oxyhydroxide is used to control hyperphosphataemia (high phosphate levels in the blood) in people with long-term kidney disease who undergoes dialysis (a procedure to eliminate toxic substances from the blood).

This medicine is also used together with calcium supplements and vitamin D to prevent the development of bone disease.

How do I take this medicine?

Take Sucroferric oxyhydroxide exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

You may take this medicine with food or immediately after a meal. Chew the tablet completely before swallowing. The tablets may be crushed to aid with chewing. Do not swallow it whole. Try to take it at the same time each day.

The dose of Sucroferric oxyhydroxide will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment regimen depending on your condition, response and tolerability to this medicine.

Sucroferric oxyhydroxide must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by the doctor.

What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have haemochromatosis (abnormal iron build-up in your organs) and any other iron accumulation disorders as this medicine may not be suitable for you.

What should I take note of while taking this medicine?

Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • history of peritonitis (inflammation of the lining in the abdomen) within the last 3 months
  • stomach problems e.g. previous or recent major surgery, infection, or inflammation of the stomach/intestines
  • liver disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly. You may need to have routine blood tests (e.g. calcium , phosphorus, iron and hepcidin levels) while you are being treated with this medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests.

What side effects could I experience?

Sucroferric oxyhydroxide may cause any of the following side effects: diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, indigestion or gastric discomfort, stomach wind, and change in taste.

You may have black tarry stools and tooth discoloration while you are being treated with this medicine. This is normal, do not be alarmed.

Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
  • swelling of the face, mouth, lips, tongue, or throat
  • severe nausea, severe vomiting, severe stomach pain, severe diarrhoea
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.

Can I take this with other medicines?

Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
  • medicines for osteoporosis e.g. alendronate
  • certain antibiotics e.g. doxycycline, cefalexin
  • medicines for thyroid disorder e.g. levothyroxine
  • medicine for pain, fever, or inflammation e.g.aspirin
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Sucroferric oxyhydroxide.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.

What special dietary instructions should I follow?

Avoid alcohol.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. Protect from moisture.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Throw away 90 days after opening, whether or not you have finished the medicine in this bottle.
