Why do I need this medicine?

Tranexamic acid helps to prevent and reduce bleeding. It is used to control bleeding after certain surgical procedures, especially in people whose blood cannot clot properly or takes a longer time to clot. It may also be used to control bleeding in other situations, such as in heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, nosebleeds, or as decided by your doctor.

How do I take this medicine?

Take Tranexamic acid exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

You may take this medicine with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not divide, chew or crush the tablet.

Try to take it at the same time each day.

What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.

When should I not use this medicine?

Do not take this medicine if you ever had an allergic reaction (rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to Tranexamic acid.

Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • current or history of blood clotting problems
  • history of seizure or fits
  • severe kidney disease
as Tranexamic acid may not be suitable for you.

DO NOT take this medicine if you are using a birth control containing oestrogen and progestin e.g. birth control pills, patch, or vaginal ring.

What should I take note of while taking this medicine?

Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • irregular menstrual cycle
  • blood in the urine
  • mild to moderate kidney disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

For as long as you are taking this medicine, you may need to have your eyes checked regularly. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests.

What side effects could I experience?

If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, stop taking Tranexamic acid and inform your doctor quickly. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.

This medicine may cause any of the following side effects: diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, tiredness, muscle and joint pain, headache, dizziness, impaired colour vision, blood clots (including blood clots in the eye).

Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.

Can I take this with other medicines?

Do not take this medicine if you are using a birth control containing oestrogen and progestin e.g. birth control pills, patch, or vaginal ring.

Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking or using any of these medicines:
  • oral tretinoin (medicine used for acne and blood cancer)
  • medicines used to dissolve clots in the blood vessels e.g. streptokinase
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with this medicine.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.

What special dietary instructions should I follow?

Avoid alcohol.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
