Why do I need this medicine?

Yellow fever vaccine is used to prevent serious infectious disease called yellow fever.

Yellow fever is a disease that occurs in certain areas of the world. It is spread through the bites of infected mosquitoes.

This medicine helps protect those living in or traveling to an area where there is a risk of yellow fever.

How do I use this medicine?

Yellow fever vaccine is to be given subcutaneously (under the skin).

Your doctor or nurse will administer the injection for you.

What should I do if I have forgotten to use this medicine?

Ensure that you keep all appointments with your doctor so that you do not miss any dose. Your doctor also needs to regularly monitor your response to Yellow fever vaccine.

If you miss an appointment or miss an injection, alert your doctor or nurse. A replacement appointment or injection should be given as soon as possible.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you ever had an allergic reaction (rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to eggs, chicken protein or Yellow fever vaccine.

Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • poor or weakened immune system due to certain medication or radiation therapy
  • weakened immune system due to illness (e.g. HIV infection)
  • ill, with fever or with an infection.
as Yellow fever vaccine may not be suitable for you.

Infants below 9 months old should not receive this vaccine unless instructed to do so by the doctor.

Do not breastfeed if you are to be vaccinated with this medicine.

What should I take note of while using this medicine?

Inform your doctor if you have bleeding disorder.

Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What side effects could I experience?

Yellow fever vaccine may cause any of the following side effects: tiredness, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, fever, joint or muscle pain, and injection site reactions e.g. pain, redness, swelling, and irritation.

Brief fainting spells can happen after vaccination. Sitting or lying down for about 15 minutes after a vaccination can help prevent fainting and injuries caused by falls.

Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience breathlessness, having rashes or swollen eyes. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.

Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.

Can I use this with other medicines?

Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any medicines which may weaken your immune system e.g. medicines for cancer.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.

What special dietary instructions should I follow?

Avoid alcohol.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in the refrigerator, between 2-8°C. Do not allow to freeze. If frozen, this medicine will become ineffective and should not be used.

Protect from light.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
