Amiodarone HCl
Indications/Uses
Life threatening recurrent ventricular arrhythmias: recurrent ventricular fibrillation & recurrent hemodynamically unstable ventricular tachycardia.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Loading dose: 800-1,600 mg/day for 1-3 wk until initial therapeutic response occurs. When adequate arrhythmia control is achieved, or if side effects become prominent, reduce to 600-800 mg/day for 1 mth. Maintenance: 400 mg/day.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Take consistently w/ or w/o meals. Take w/ meals if high dose or to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Severe sinus node dysfunction; 2nd & 3rd-degree AV block; bradycardia episodes have caused syncope (except when used in conjunction w/ pacemaker).
Special Precautions
Corneal microdeposits; photosensitivity; potential hyperthyroidism; pulmonary toxicity. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn.
Adverse Reactions
Malaise, fatigue, tremor, involuntary movements, peripheral neuropathy; vomiting, constipation, anorexia; testicular swelling & gynecomastia in males, breast enlargement & galactorrhoea in females.
Drug Interactions
Increased serum conc of digoxin. Potentiation of warfarin-type anticoagulants.
