Indications/Uses
Adjunct to diet to reduce elevated total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol (LDL-C), apolipoprotein B & triglyceride levels, & to increase HDL cholesterol in patients w/ primary hypercholesterolemia (heterozygous familial & non-familial) & mixed dyslipidemia; & for the treatment of patients w/ elevated serum triglyceride levels. Primary dysbetalipoproteinemia in patients who do not respond adequately to diet. Reduces total cholesterol & LDL-C in patients w/ homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. Adjunct to other lipid-lowering treatments, or if such treatments are unavailable. Reduces risk of MI, revascularization procedures, & angina in adult patients w/o clinically evident CHD, but w/ multiple risk factors.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Hypercholesterolemia (heterozygous familial & nonfamilial) & mixed dyslipidemia (Fredrickson types IIa and IIb) 10 mg once daily. Dosage range: 10-80 mg once daily. Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia 10-80 mg daily, as an adjunct to other lipid-lowering treatments, or if such treatments are unavailable. Childn 10-17 yr Heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia Initially, 10 mg once daily. Max: 20 mg/day.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Acute liver disease or unexplained persistent serum transaminase elevation. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
May be combined w/ a bile acid binding resin for additive effect. Rhabdomyolysis & acute renal failure secondary to myoglobinuria may occur. May elevate liver enzymes.
Adverse Reactions
Headache, flu syndrome, abdominal pain, back pain, asthenia; constipation, diarrhea; rash; arthralgia, myalgia.
Drug Interactions
Avoid combination w/ fibrates. Increased risk of myopathy in concurrent use w/ cyclosporin, fibric acid derivatives, niacin, erythromycin, azole antifungals.

C10AA05 - atorvastatin ; Belongs to the class of HMG CoA reductase inhibitors. Used in the treatment of hyperlipidemia.
