Benzoyl peroxide is used on its own or together with other medicines to treat acne.
Apply Benzoyl peroxide exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Benzoyl peroxide is available as a gel, cream or as a lotion.
To use this medicine, follow these steps:
- Wash your hands.
- Clean and dry affected area before application.
- Apply a thin layer of Benzoyl peroxide on the skin. Rub gently until it disappears. Do not cover, wrap or bandage the area unless instructed by the doctor.
- Wash your hands after using.
- Replace the cap of the tube.
Use Benzoyl peroxide only on the affected areas of the skin. Avoid any contact of this medicine with your eyes, mouth, lips, broken or damaged skin. If an accidental contact occurs, rinse it immediately with water.
Do not apply Benzoyl peroxide onto your hair or any coloured fabric as it may cause discolouration.
Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
Do not apply more than what is instructed by the doctor to make up for the missed dose.
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Benzoyl peroxide may make your skin to be more sensitive to sunlight. Apply sunscreen when going outdoors. Avoid direct or prolonged exposure to the sun and ultraviolet (UV) lamps like tanning beds.
Benzoyl peroxide may cause any of the following side effects: irritation, itching, dryness, redness, peeling or a burning sensation in the skin.
This medicine may also make your skin to be more sensitive to sunlight. Apply sunscreen when going outdoors and avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight and UV lamps.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are using any other medicines for your acne e.g. isotretinoin.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
