Indications/Uses
Adjunct to diet of type 2 DM as monotherapy or in combination w/ a sulfonylurea, insulin or metformin.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 25 mg given orally tds at the start of each main meal. Dosage may be increased from 25-50 mg tds. Maintenance: 50-100 mg tds.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take w/ 1st bite of each main meal.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Diabetic ketoacidosis or cirrhosis, inflammatory bowel disease, colonic ulceration, partial intestinal obstruction or predisposed to intestinal obstruction, chronic intestinal diseases associated w/ marked disorders of digestion or absorption. Lactation.
Special Precautions
Hypoglycemia w/ sulfonylurea or insulin.
Adverse Reactions
Abdominal pain, diarrhea, flatulence.
Drug Interactions
Thiazides & other diuretics, corticosteroids, phenothiazines, thyroid products, estrogens, OC, phenytoin, nicotinic acid, sympathomimetics, Ca-channel-blocking drugs, INH, sulfonylureas or insulin, intestinal adsorbents (eg charcoal) & digestive enzyme prep containing carbohydrate-splitting enzymes (eg amylase, pancreatin).
