Cholecalciferol
Indications/Uses
Severe vit D deficiency. Osteomalacia. Osteoporosis in combination w/ Ca. Deficiency during anticonvulsive therapy or due to hepatobiliary disease/malabsorption syndrome. Vit D deficiency in pregnant & lactating women.
Dosage/Direction for Use
1 cap (60,000 IU) once a week followed by 1,000 IU cap daily for 8-12 wk.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take w/ main meals for better absorption.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cholecalciferol, ergocalciferol, or vit D metabolites eg, calcitriol, calcifediol, alfacalcidol, calcipotriol. Hypercalcemia. Hypervitaminosis D.
Special Precautions
Hyperlipidemia (eg, potential exacerbation of LDL elevation). Risk of metastatic calcification due to hyperphosphatemia. Potential exacerbation of hypercalcemic effects in arteriosclerosis, cardiac conditions & renal impairment during use. Patients w/ renal osteodystrophy/other conditions requiring high doses of pure vit D; sarcoidosis/other granulomatous disease. Enhanced risk of hypercalcemia in concurrent use w/ Ca-containing prep, other vit D-containing prep or vit D analogs, or thiazide diuretics. Liver disease & hepatic insufficiency. Renal insufficiency. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Weakness, fatigue, sleepiness, headache, loss of appetite, dry mouth, metallic taste, nausea & vomiting w/ high doses. Vit D toxicity including nephrocalcinosis/renal failure, HTN & psychosis w/ prolonged use. Hypervitaminosis D.
Drug Interactions
May increase effects & side effects of calcipotriene. May increase effects of digoxin & lead to irregular heartbeat. Large amounts of vit D may decrease effectiveness of diltiazem. Increased absorption of Al salts w/ antacids.
