Imunor is a dual combination of naturally occurring bovine colostrum and lactoferrin, an iron-binding protein.
Pharmacology: Imunor is a latest immunomodulating product with proven efficacy and value in immune deficiency. The contents of Imunor have been well tested and proven for their immune enhancing strengths.
Lactoferrin in Imunor is considered as a multifunctional or multi-tasking protein. It provides the body's first immune defense, helps restore the body's natural defenses, promotes a healthy balance of natural intestinal flora. And owing to its iron binding properties, lactoferrin possesses antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and immunomodulatory actions.
Lactoferrin is an iron binding multifunctional glycoprotein that is present in several mucosal secretions eg, milk, tears and saliva. Lactoferrin is also an abundant component of the specific granules of neutrophils and can be released into the serum upon neutrophil degranulation. One of the functions of this protein is the transport of metals, but it is also an important component of the nonspecific immune system. Human and bovine lactoferrins display a broad antimicrobial spectrum against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, fungi and several viruses. While the iron-binding properties were originally believed to be solely responsible for the host defense properties ascribed to lactoferrin, it is now known that other mechanisms contribute to the antimicrobial role of this glycoprotein.
Lactoferrin is found throughout the human body and occurs in all secretions that bathe mucous membranes eg, saliva, tears, bronchial and nasal secretions, hepatic bile, pancreatic fluids and is an essential factor in the immune response. Lactoferrin is concentrated in oral cavities where it will come in direct contact with pathogens (ie, viruses, bacteria, etc) and kills or greatly suppresses these pathogens through a variety of different mechanisms. In fact, there are specific receptors for lactoferrin found on many key immune cells eg, lymphocytes, monocytes and macrophages and is known to be directly involved in the up-regulation of natural killer (NK) cell activity.
Gastrointestinal Function: Lactoferrin appears to be particularly important in the health and function of the intestinal tract. It has been found to greatly reduce systemic and intestinal inflammation in such conditions as inflammatory bowel disease, among others. Animals subjected to a variety of pathogens known to cause both systemic and intestinal inflammation and damage show much greater resistance and reduced inflammation when fed lactoferrin.
Antiviral Effects: Lactoferrin has been found to both directly and indirectly inhibit several viruses that cause disease in humans. It has antiviral activity against both DNA and RNA virus (CMV, HIV, hepatitis C, rotavirus, herpes simplex, adenovirus). Lactoferrin directly inhibits viruses by binding to viral receptor sites thus preventing the virus from infecting healthy cells. Lactoferrin indirectly kills or inhibits viruses by augmenting systemic immune response to a viral invasion.
Colostrum is the thin, yellow, milky fluid secreted by the mammary gland a few days after birth. Colostrum is an incredible source of immunoglobulins, immuno-enhancing molecules, transfer factors and growth-stimulating factors. IgG is the most abundant immunoglobulin found in bovine colostrum and assists in the body's immune response to infection. Found within the blood, lymphatic system and mucous membranes, IgG may help strengthen and modulate the immune system.
Bovine colostrum was highly effective in the prophylactic treatment of recurrent URTIs and diarrhea in reducing not only the episodes but also the hospitalization due to them.
Low dose bovine colostrum protein concentrate supplementation elicited improvements in TT40 performance during a HIT period and maintained ventilator threshold following 5 consecutive days of HIT.
Bovine colostrum contains nutrients eg, vitamins and essential fatty acids, as well as non-nutrient components including immunoglobulins (IgG1), complement, leukocytes, lysozyme, tripeptide growth factors and antioxidants which have demonstrated roles in innate immunity.
Pharmacokinetics: Imunor contains bovine milk components. These are fully absorbed and utilized after oral administration irrespective of meals. Because of its natural source, there is no dose restriction and can be consumed in larger doses. Lactoferrin is particularly resistant to proteolytic degradation in alimentary tract, in contrast to other milk proteins.
