Indications/Uses
Intrauterine contraception in women of childbearing age.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Duration: 10 yr. Immediate postpartum Postplacental Insert w/in 10 min after expulsion of placenta following vag delivery on same delivery table. lntracesarean Insert through uterine incision during cesarean delivery, after removal of placenta & prior to closure of uterine incision. W/in 48 hr after delivery: Insert w/in 48 hr of delivery & prior to discharge from postpartum ward. Postabortion Insert following abortion if there is no infection, bleeding or any other contraindications. Extended postpartum/interval Insert any time after 6 wk postpartum.
Contraindications
Absolute: Undiagnosed abnormal vag bleeding. Acute cervical, uterine, or salpingeal infection. Past salpingitis & suspected gynecologic malignancy. Current pregnancy. Relative: Nulliparity or high priority attached to future childbearing. Prior ectopic pregnancy. History of STDs. Multiple sexual partners. Moderate or severe dysmenorrhea. Congenital anomalies of uterus or other abnormalities eg, leiomyomas. Fe deficiency anemia (for the copper IUD). Valvular heart disease. Frequent expulsions or problems w/ prior IUD use.
Special Precautions
Heavier bleeding, indicating possibility of anemia. Remove if pregnancy has occurred due to risk of ectopic pregnancy or if exposed to conditions that substantially increase risk of pelvic inflammatory disease. Increased risk of spontaneous expulsion. Not to be used by women w/ abnormal shaped uterus or high personal risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Offers no protection against HIV or other STIs. Treat infection that developed during time of birth prior to insertion.
Adverse Reactions
Increased amount, duration, & painfulness of menstrual periods.
