Dosage/Direction for Use
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take at least 30 min before the 1st food/beverage/medication of the day with plain water only.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Abnormalities of the esophagus; hypercalcemia relevant diseases; evidence of vit D toxicity.
Special Precautions
Discontinue if esophageal reactions develop. Active upper GI problems eg dysphagia, esophageal diseases, gastritis, duodenitis or ulcers. Correct hypocalcemia or other mineral disturbances before initiating therapy. Paget's disease. Renal insufficiency. Male osteoporosis. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Increased ALT/AST; joint & muscle pain, lumbago; cytoscopy, dysuria; nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, dyspepsia, constipation, vomiting; palpitation, insomnia, melancholia, dizziness; pain, headache, chest pain; itch, rash; increased expectoration, cough, rhinitis, pharyngitis, dyspnea.
Drug Interactions
Decreased absorption w/ Ca supplements/antacids; increased upper GI adverse events w/ aspirin & NSAIDs; increased hypercalcemia w/ thiazide diuretics; may precipitate cardiac arrhythmias w/ digitalis; enhanced Ca absorption w/ vit D derivatives/metabolites; inhibited Ca absorption w/ corticosteroids; may cause hypermagnesemia w/ Mg-containing antacids; stimulate phosphorus transport; increased clearance w/ phenytoin & phenobarb, reduced intestinal absorption w/ cholestyramine. Estrogen.
