Contents
Carbohydrates, protein hydrolysate, lysine monoHCl, iron, folic acid.
Description
Each 15 mL contains carbohydrates (as refined sugar) 5 g, protein hydrolysate (equivalent to nitrogen (N) 0.168 g) 1.5 g, lysine monoHCl 50 mg, elemental iron (as dried ferrous sulphate) 10 mg and folic acid 0.75 mg.
It also contains sucrose and artificial-flavoured base.
Action
Protein Supplement.
Pharmacology: Iron is used metabolically in the formation of haemoglobin and is necessary for the oxidative processes of living tissue.
Folic acid supplementation prevents the development of folate deficiency megaloblastic anaemia particularly during the 3rd trimester of pregnancy.
Indications/Uses
For the prevention and treatment of iron deficiency in pregnancy and to supply a maintenance dosage of folic acid in normal population.
Dosage/Direction for Use
1 tbsp diluted in water, taken before meals, twice a day.
Shake well before use.
Overdosage
Symptoms: Epigastric pain, diarrhoea and vomiting.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients of Protectone.
Pernicious anaemia and megaloblastic anaemia caused by vitamin B12 deficiency.
Special Precautions
Care should be taken when given to patients with iron storage or iron absorption diseases, haemoglobinopathies or existing GI disease.
Side Effects
Gastrointestinal discomfort, diarrhoea, constipation and vomiting may occur. Side effects can be reduced by taking Protectone with or immediately after food. As a result of iron therapy, stools may become darkened or black in colour.
Storage
Keep the cap tightly closed. Store in a cool, dark and dry place.
