dl-α-tocopheryl acetate (vit E)
Indications/Uses
Treatment & prevention of vit E deficiency; neurological disorder. Correction of vit E deficiency occurring in malabsorption disorders ie, cystic fibrosis, chronic cholestasis & abetalipoproteinemia.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Pregnancy (especially 1st trimester) & lactation.
Special Precautions
Large doses may increase bleeding tendencies in vit K-deficient patients eg, those taking oral anticoagulants. Risk of thrombosis eg, in those taking estrogens. Increased incidence of necrotizing enterocolitis in premature infants weighing <1.5 kg.
Adverse Reactions
Large doses may cause diarrhea, abdominal pain, other GI disturbances; blurred vision, dizziness, fatigue & weakness.
Drug Interactions
May increase the risk of thrombosis w/ estrogens. Absorption may be interfered w/ colestyramine, colestipol & orlistat. High doses may increase the effects of oral anticoagulants.
