Salbutamol sulfate
Indications/Uses
For the relief & prevention of asthma symptoms in mild, moderate or severe asthma.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Max: Should not exceed 8 inhalations in 24 hr. Adult (including elderly) Relief of acute asthma symptoms including bronchospasm 1 inhalation (100 mcg) as a single min starting dose, may be increased to 2 inhalations if necessary. Prevent allergen- or exercise-induced symptoms 2 inhalations 10-15 min before challenge. Chronic therapy 2 inhalations up to qid. Childn Relief of acute asthma symptoms including bronchospasm, or before allergen exposure or exercise 1 inhalation or 2 inhalations, if necessary. Chronic therapy 2 inhalation up to qid.
Contraindications
History of hypersensitivity to salbutamol, sympathomimetic amines, aerosol propellants. Hyperthyroidism; tachyarrhythmia.
Special Precautions
Discontinue if immediate hypersensitivity reactions or paradoxical bronchospasm occurs. Deterioration of asthma control. Patients w/ underlying CV disorders, especially coronary insufficiency, cardiac arrhythmias & HTN; thyrotoxicosis. Coexisting conditions eg, convulsive disorders, hyperthyroidism, or DM & in patients who are unusually responsive to sympathomimetic amines. Hypokalemia. Regular medical assessment, including lung-function testing in patients w/ severe asthma. Assess & consider the need for increased anti-inflammatory therapy (eg, higher doses of inhaled corticosteroids or a course of oral corticosteroid). Concomitant use w/ xanthine derivatives, steroids & diuretics. Pregnancy & lactation. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Drug Interactions
Blocked pulmonary effect & may produce severe bronchospasm in patients w/ asthma w/ β-blockers (eg, propranolol). Deleterious CV effects w/ other short-acting sympathomimetic aerosol bronchodilators. May enhance effect w/ aminophylline or other xanthines. May acutely worsen ECG changes &/or hypokalemia w/ non-K sparing diuretics (eg, loop or thiazide diuretics). Mean decrease in serum digoxin levels. May potentiate action on the vascular system w/ MAOIs or TCAs or w/in 2 wk of discontinuation.
