Indications/Uses
Nosocomial pneumonia (including ventilator-associated pneumonia), complicated intra-abdominal infection & complicated UTI including pyelonephritis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Patient ≥18 yr Complicated intra-abdominal infection 500 mg 1 hr IV infusion every 8 hr for 5-14 days. Complicated UTI including pyelonephritis 500 mg 1 hr IV infusion every 8 hr for 10 days. May be extended up to 14 days for patients w/ concurrent bacteremia. Renal impairment CrCl ≥30 to ≤50 mL/min 250 mg IV (over 1 hr) every 8 hr, >10 to <30 mL/min 250 mg IV (over 1 hr) every 12 hr.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Anaphylactic reactions to β-lactams.
Special Precautions
Previous hypersensitivity reactions w/ other carbapenems, cephalosporins, penicillins or other allergens. Cross-hyperreactivity w/ β-lactams. Discontinue if C. difficile-associated diarrhea is suspected. Frequently monitor serum valproic acid conc after initiating therapy. May increase the risk of the development of drug resistant bacteria. Moderately & severely impaired renal function. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Headache, nausea, diarrhea, rash & phlebitis.
Drug Interactions
May reduce serum valproic acid conc. Increase plasma conc w/ probenecid.
