Indications/Uses
Resp, GIT, GUT, skin & soft tissue infections caused by susceptible gm +ve & gm -ve organisms. Inj: Acute & latent listeriosis & leptospirosis, endocarditis, bacterial meningitis; antibacterial prophylaxis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Cap 1 cap tid-qid. IM/IV Adult & adolescent 2-6 g daily. Childn 50-100 mg/kg daily. Meningitis Septicemia & other severe infections 300-400 mg/kg/day or 8-16 g daily by short IV fusion. Childn >20 kg 250-500 mg every 6 hr, <20 kg 100-200 mg/kg/day every 6 hr. Infant >7 days 75 mg/kg/day every 8 hr, <7 days 50 mg/kg/day every 12 hr. Severe infections up to 2 g every 6 hr. Bacterial meningitis Adult & Childn >20 kg 120-250 mg/kg/day every 3-4 hr. Childn <20 kg 150-250 mg/kg/day every 4-6 hr. Infant >7 days 150-250 mg/kg/day every 6-8 hr. Infant <7 days 100 mg/kg/day every 12 hr.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take 1 hr before or 2 hr after meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to penicillins. Antiperistaltics.
Special Precautions
Cap: Occurrence of GI superinfection w/ mycotic organisms or other pathogens. CHF. Avoid in patients w/ infectious mononucleosis. Syphilis. Discontinue medication if overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms occurs. Impaired renal function. Inj: Not suited for the treatment of cholangitis & cholecystitis except in milder cases w/o major cholestasis. Discontinue medication if severe & persistent diarrhea antibiotic-related pseudomembranous colitis occurs. Monitor liver function during long-term treatment (high dose).
Adverse Reactions
Inj: Rashes. Exfoliative dermatitis & erythema multiforme have been reported. Glossitis, stomatitis, fever, joint pain, angioneurotic edema or instertitial nephritis.
