Glimepiride
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 1-2 mg daily. Maintenance: Up to 4 mg daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take immediately before the 1st main meal of the day. Do not skip meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitive to glimepiride, other sulfonylureas & sulfonamide derivatives. Ketoacidosis, severe infections, trauma.
Special Precautions
Should not be used in type 1 DM. Renal impairment or hepatic function. Elderly, debilitated or malnourished patients & w/ adrenal or pituitary insufficiency. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, heartburn, anorexia, diarrhea, metallic taste; increased appetite & wt gain, skin rashes & pruritus.
Drug Interactions
Increased hypoglycemic effect w/ ACE inhibitors, alcohol, allopurinol, analgesic (eg, azapropazone, phenylbutazone, salicylates), azole antifungals (eg, fluconazole, ketoconazole, & miconazole), chloramphenicol, cimetidine, clofibrate, & coumarin anticoagulants, fluoroquinolones, heparin, MAOIs, ranitidine, sulfinpyrazone sulfonamides (eg, co-trimoxazole), tetracyclines, TCAs. Increased hyperglycemic effect w/ octreotide.
