Cefuroxime axetil
Indications/Uses
FC tab: Infections due to gm +ve & gm -ve bacteria; surgical prophylaxis; more active against H. influenzae & Neisseria gonorrhea; Lyme disease. Oral susp: Treatment of susceptible infections including bone & joint; bronchitis (& other lower resp tract infections), gonorrhea, meningitis, otitis media, peritonitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis, skin infections (including soft tissue infections) & UTI. Surgical infection prophylaxis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
FC tab Adult Uncomplicated UTI 125 mg bid. Resp tract infection 250-500 mg bid. Oral susp Adult Uncomplicated resp tract infection 2.5 mL bid. Resp tract infection 5-10 mL bid. Childn >2 yr Otitis media 5 mL or 15 mg/kg bid. Max: 10 mL daily, >3 mth 2.5 mL or 10 mg/kg bid. Max: 5 mL daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
History of allergy. Oral susp: Patients w/ renal impairment. Monitor renal hematological status especially during prolonged & high-dose therapy.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances including diarrhea, nausea & vomiting.
Drug Interactions
Reduced renal clearance w/ probenecid.
