Betamethasone valerate
Indications/Uses
Relief of inflammatory & pruritic manifestations of steroid responsive dermatoses including atopic (infantile atopic dermatitis), nummular (discoid eczema), seborrheic, irritant or allergic dermatitis; prurigo nodularis; psoriasis (excluding widespread plaque psoriasis); lichen simplex chronicus (neurodermatitis) & planus; discoid lupus erythematosus; adjunct to systemic steroid therapy in generalized erythroderma; insect bite reactions & milliaria (prickly heat).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult, elderly & childn >1 yr Apply thinly to affected area once-bid for up to 4 wk.
Contraindications
Untreated cutaneous infections, rosacea, acne vulgaris, pruritus w/o inflammation, perianal & genital pruritus, perioral dermatitis. Dermatoses including dermatitis in infants <1 yr.
Special Precautions
History of local hypersensitivity to corticosteroids. W/draw gradually if manifestations of hypercortisolism (Cushing's syndrome) & reversible hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis suppression are observed & if there is spread of infection. Increased risk of systemic effects. Avoid abrupt w/drawal. Psoriasis. Prolonged application to face. Avoid contact w/ eyes. Increased risk of infection when use for the treatment of dermatitis in chronic leg ulcers & w/ use of occlusive dressings. Pregnancy & lactation. Infants & childn <12 yr (long-term & continuous use).
Adverse Reactions
Pruritus, local skin burning or pain.
Drug Interactions
Increased systemic exposure w/ CYP3A4 inhibitors eg, ritonavir, itraconazole.
