Meclizine HCl
Indications/Uses
Prevention & treatment of nausea, vomiting or dizziness associated w/ motion sickness. Symptomatic management of radiation sickness, Meniere's syndrome, labyrinthitis & other vestibular disturbances.
Dosage/Direction for Use
25 mg Adult & childn >12 yr 1 or 2 tab at least 1 hr before travelling. Motion sickness 25-50 mg as single dose for approx 24 hr. Labyrinthine & vestibular disturbances 25-100 mg daily in divided doses. Radiation sickness 50 mg administered 2-12 hr prior to radiation treatment. 12.5 mg Childn ≥11 yr 2 tab, 5-10 yr 1 tab. Daily dose should be taken 1 hr before travel starts for 24-hr protection.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. 12.5 mg: Patients taking MAOI antidepressant.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ difficulty in breathing & those w/ difficulty in urination due to enlargement of prostate gland. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation. 12.5 mg: Patients taking antidepressant, alcoholics or who ingest alcohol in excess. Patients w/ increased pressure in the eye, asthma, emphysema, chronic pulmonary disease & those taking sedatives & tranquilizers. 25 mg: Patients w/ glaucoma or prostatic enlargement. Hyperexcitability in childn.
Adverse Reactions
Drowsiness, fatigue, dry mouth, constipation, headache, stomach upset. 25 mg: Vomiting.
Drug Interactions
12.5 mg: May increase drowsiness w/ alcohol, sedatives, anti-allergic drugs & tranquilizers. 25 mg: Increased CNS depression w/ other CNS depressant eg, barbiturates, alcohol, tranquilizers & sedatives.
