Concise Prescribing Info
Terbutaline sulfate
Bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema & other lung diseases where bronchospasm is a complicating factor.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Body wt >20 kg 5 mg (1 single dose unit, 2 mL). <20 kg 2.5 mg (½ single dose unit, 1 mL). Doses are inhaled up to 4 times in a 24-hr period.
Special Precautions
Seek medical advice if a previously effective dose no longer gives the same symptomatic relief. Thyrotoxicosis & severe CV disorder eg, ischemic heart disease, tachyarrhythmias or severe heart failure, diabetics. Acute severe asthma. Additional blood glucose controls in diabetic patients. Risk of serious hypokalemia. Regularly check patient's inhalation technique. Monitor serum K levels. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Tremor, headache, nausea, tonic muscle cramps, tachycardia & palpitations. Urticaria & exanthema. Sleep & behavioral disturbance eg, agitation, hyperactivity & restlessness.
Drug Interactions
May partly or totally inhibit effect by β-receptor blocking agents (including eye drops), especially non-selective. Hypokalemia may be potentiated by concomitant treatment w/ xanthine derivatives, steroids & diuretics.
ATC Classification
R03AC03 - terbutaline ; Belongs to the class of adrenergic inhalants, selective beta-2-adrenoreceptor agonists. Used in the treatment of obstructive airway diseases.
