Metoprolol tartrate
Indications/Uses
Management of HTN, angina pectoris, cardiac arrhythmias & MI; hyperthyroidism, migraine.
Dosage/Direction for Use
HTN 100-mg tab Initially 1 tab daily, increased wkly according to patient's response to 4 tab, can be taken as single daily dose or bid. Maintenance: 1-2 tab daily. Angina pectoris 50-mg tab 1-2 tab bid-tid. Cardiac arrhythmias 50-mg tab 1 tab bid-tid, increased if necessary to 6 tab daily in divided doses.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Heart failure; metabolic acidosis, sinus bradycardia or partial heart block.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ bronchospasm or asthma or those w/ history of obstructive airway disease.
Adverse Reactions
Heart failure, heart block & bronchospasm; fatigue, coldness of the extremities & sleep disturbances; paresthesia, peripheral neuropathy & myopathies; GI effects eg, nausea & vomiting, diarrhea, constipation & abdominal cramps.
Drug Interactions
Verapamil- & diltiazem-type IV Ca antagonist. Class I antiarrhythmics; antihistaminse, H2-blockers, antidepressants, antipsychotics. Sympathomimetic ganglion-blocking agent, other β-blockers, MAOIs, clonidine, inhalation anesth, rifampicin, alcohol, hydralazine, indomethacin & other prostaglandin synthetase inhibitor. Oral antidiabetics; digitalis glycosides.
