Cefalexin monohydrate
Indications/Uses
Infections caused by susceptible microorganisms eg, skin & skin structure infections; bone & joint infections; ENT infections eg, otitis media; resp tract infections; GUT infections including acute prostatitis; dental infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 250-500 mg every 6 hr depending on the type & severity of infection. Cystitis 7-14 days. More severe infections or those caused by less susceptible organisms Up to 4 g daily. Duration of treatment: 5-7 days (mild infections), min of 7 days (moderate infections) and 10 days (serious or extensive infections).
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
History of hypersensitivity to penicillins. History of allergy to cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity. Pseudomembranous colitis. False +ve Coombs' test. Renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Urticaria, pruritus, rash, fever & chills, reactions resembling serum sickness, eosinophilia, joint pain or inflammation, edema, erythema, genital & anal pruritus, angioedema, shock, hypotension, vasodilation, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, erythema multiforme, toxic epidermal necrolysis & exfoliative dermatitis. Hypersensitivity.
Drug Interactions
Disulfiram-like reactions w/ alcohol. Prolonged serum conc w/ probenecid. May increase risk of nephrotoxicity w/ nephrotoxic drugs eg, aminoglycosides, colistin, polymyxin B or vancomycin. Additive or synergistic w/ aminoglycosides & penicillins. Antagonism w/ chloramphenicol.
