Cefalexin monohydrate
Indications/Uses
Infections of the resp tract, GUT, ear & bone, skin & soft tissues including penicillinase-producing S. aureus infections. Dental infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Childn 25-50 mg/kg/day in 4 divided doses. Severe infection Double the dose. β-hemolytic strep infection Take for 10 days. Otitis media 75-100 mg/kg/day divided qid.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Penicillin-sensitive patients. Impaired renal function.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances; diarrhea, hypersensitivity reactions.
Drug Interactions
Bacteriostatic antibiotics may reduce cephalosporin effectiveness. Probenecid may increase & prolong cephalosporin plasma levels & toxicity.
