Cefuroxime axetil
Treatment of infections due to sensitive gm +ve & gm -ve bacteria. Infections caused by susceptible organisms eg, bone & joint infections, bronchitis (& other lower resp tract infections), gonorrhea, meningitis, otitis media, peritonitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis, skin & skin structure infections, UTI; surgical infection prophylaxis, Lyme disease.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & adolescents ≥13 yr Pharyngitis or tonsillitis, acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis 250 mg 12 hrly for 10 days. Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis 250-500 mg 12 hrly for 10 days or 500-750 mg 8 hrly. Uncomplicated skin & skin structure infections 250-500 mg 12 hrly for 10 days. Uncomplicated UTI 250 mg 12 hrly for 7-10 days. Uncomplicated gonorrhea 1,000 mg once daily. Childn Acute otitis media & bacterial maxillary sinusitis 250 mg 12 hrly for 10 days. Susp Childn 3 mth-12 yr Pharyngitis/tonsillitis 20 mg/kg/day bid for 10 days. Max: 500 mg. Acute otitis media, acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis, impetigo 30 mg/kg/day bid for 10 days. Max: 1 g.
Should be taken with food.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to penicillins. History of allergy & GI disease (colitis). Superinfections may occur w/ prolonged use. Risk of Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea. Concurrent use w/ potent diuretics. Monitor prothrombin time in patients w/ renal or hepatic impairment, poor nutritional state, those receiving a protracted course of antibacterial therapy & previously stabilized on anticoagulant therapy. False +ve reaction w/ copper reduction tests. Discontinue if seizures occur. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea; decreased Hb/hematocrit, eosinophilia, nausea/vomiting, vaginitis, transient rise in hepatic transaminases, thrombophlebitis. Susp: Candida overgrowth; headache, dizziness; GI disturbances including abdominal pain.
Drug Interactions
Increased AUC & Cmax w/ probenecid. Decreased bioavailability w/ antacids. Reduce efficacy of combined OCs (estrogen/progesterone).
