Ciprofloxacin HCl
Anthrax, biliary tract infections, infected bites & stings, bone & joint infections, brucellosis, cat scratch disease, chancroid, exacerbations of cystic fibrosis, gastroenteritis, gonorrhea, Legionnaire's disease, otitis externa, otitis media, peritonitis, Q fever, lower resp tract infections, septicemia, skin & soft tissue infections, spotted fevers, typhoid & paratyphoid fever, typhus & UTI. Prophylaxis of meningococcal meningitis & surgical infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 250-750 mg bid. Gonorrhea 250 or 500 mg once daily. Meningococcal meningitis prophylaxis 500 mg once daily. Surgical infection prophylaxis 750 mg as a single dose given 60-90 min pre-op. Acute exacerbations of cystic fibrosis associated w/ P. aeruginosa infection Adult & childn >5 yr 20 mg/kg bid. Max: 750 mg bid.
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take 1 hr before or 2 hr after meals. Do not take w/ antacids & caffeinated/dairy products.
MRSA infections. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn, adolescents.
Special Precautions
Epilepsy or history of CNS disorders. Discontinue use if tendon pain, inflammation or rupture occurs. Hepatic or renal impairment, G6PD deficiency, myasthenia gravis. Maintain adequate fluid intake. Avoid excessive alkalinity of the urine & exposure to strong sunlight & sunlamps. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery especially w/ alcohol use.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia; headache, dizziness, restlessness, tremor, drowsiness, insomnia, nightmares, visual & other sensory disturbances; rash, pruritus, vasculitis, erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, photosensitivity; elevated liver enzyme values, jaundice, hepatitis; eosinophilia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia or agranulocytosis. Transient increase in serum creatinine or BUN.
Drug Interactions
Elevated serum conc & prolonged elimination t1/2 of theophylline. Increased t1/2 & decreased clearance of caffeine. May interfere absorption w/ antacids containing Mg, Al or Ca. Altered serum levels of phenytoin. Enhanced effects of warfarin & its derivatives. Interfered w/ renal tubular secretion w/ probenecid.
