Ciprofloxacin HCl
Indications/Uses
Treatment of infections of the resp tract, urinary tract, GI system (including typhoid fever), gonorrhea & septicemia caused by sensitive organisms.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult ≥18 yr 500 mg bid. Uncomplicated acute gonorrhea 250 mg as single dose. Meningococcal meningitis prophylaxis 500 mg. Inhalational anthrax Childn & adolescent 15 mg/kg bid, not to exceed 500 mg bid for 60 days.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to minimise GI discomfort. Do not take w/ antacids, Fe or dairy products.
Contraindications
Epilepsy, history of CNS disorders, myasthenia gravis & G6PD deficiency. Discontinue use if tendon pain, inflammation or rupture occurs. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn & adolescent.
Special Precautions
High risk of crystalluria in patients w/ alkaline urine. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery w/ concomitant alcohol use. Renal & severe hepatic impairment. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances eg, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain & dyspepsia. CNS effects eg, headache, anorexia, flatulence, bilirubinemia, dizziness & restlessness. Hypersensitivity reactions eg, rash, pruritus, photosensitivity, vasculitis, erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, laryngeal edema & anaphylaxis.
Drug Interactions
Drugs metabolized by the liver eg, theophylline & caffeine; Mg-, Al-, Fe- & Zn-containing antacids, sucralfate; dairy products w/ high Ca content; naproxen, chloroquine; opioid analgesics, cyclosporine, probenecid & midazolam.
