Cefixime trihydrate
Indications/Uses
Infections due to sensitive gm +ve & gm -ve bacteria; gonorrhea.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >10 yr 200-400 mg daily in 2 divided doses. Childn 11-12 yr 15 mL or 300 mg; 5-10 yr 10 mL or 200 mg daily; 1-4 yr 5 mL or 100 mg; 6 mth to 1 yr 3.75 mL or 75 mg daily. Adult or childn weighing ≤30 kg 200-400 mg.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
History of hypersensitivity to penicillins & shock due to cefixime or other cephalosporins. Personal or familial history of allergy eg, bronchial asthma, rash & urticaria; serious renal function disorder. Patients w/ poor oral nutrition, those receiving parenteral nutrition & in a debilitated state. Elderly.
Special Precautions
Perform sensitivity testing prior to antibiotic administration. Pregnancy. Newborns & prematures.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea & stool changes (high doses). Rash, pruritus, urticaria, drug fever & arthralgia.
