Clarithromycin
Indications/Uses
Treatment of acquired resp tract infections including pharyngitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, folliculitis, cellulitis, erysipelas, sinusitis & otitis media; skin & soft tissue infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 250 mg bid. Severe infections May be increased to 500 mg bid for 7-14 days. Childn 7.5 mg/kg bid 12 hrly for 5-10 days. M. avium complex infection 500 mg bid.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity; clarithromycin-induced liver damage. Concomitant use w/ colchicine.
Special Precautions
Hepatic & renal impairment. Type II DM patients taking sulfonylurea. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances eg, abdominal discomfort & cramp, nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia & diarrhea.
Drug Interactions
Alprazolam, astemizole, carbamazepine, cilostazol, cisapride, cyclosporine, disopyramide, ergot alkaloids, lovastatin, methylprednisolone, midazolam, omeprazole, oral anticoagulants eg, warfarin, pimozide, quinidine, rifabutin, sildenafil, simvastatin, tacrolimus, terfenadine, triazolam, vinblastine; fluoxetine, nitrazepam; ritonavir, nevirapine, zidovudine; colchicine; disulfiram; theophylline, digoxin, itraconazole, glipizide, glibenclamide &/or insulin.
