Co-amoxiclav (amoxicillin & clavulanic acid). Per 625 mg tab Amoxicillin 500 mg, clavulanic acid 125 mg
Indications/Uses
Susceptible infections of lower resp tract infections, otitis media & sinusitis caused by β-lactamase producing strains of H. influenzae & Moraxella (Branhamella) catarrhalis; skin & skin structure infections caused by S. aureus, E. coli & Klebsiella spp & Enterobacter spp.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >12 yr Mild to moderate infection 325 mg every 8 hr. Severe & resp tract infection 625 mg every 8 hr.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Preferably taken at the start of meals for better absorption & to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to penicillin. History of amoxicillin w/ clavulanic acid-associated cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction. Mononucleosis.
Special Precautions
Possibility of superinfections w/ mycotic or bacterial pathogens. Discontinue if superinfections occur.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea, nausea, skin rashes, urticaria, vomiting & vaginitis.
Drug Interactions
Decreased renal tubular secretion w/ probenecid. Increased & prolonged blood levels of amoxicillin. May reduce efficacy of OCs. May prolong bleeding time w/ anticoagulants.
