Treatment & prevention of vit D deficiency. As adjunct to specific therapy for osteoporosis in patients w/ vit D deficiency or at risk of vit D insufficiency.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & elderly Vit D deficiency serum levels <25 nmol/L (<10 ng/mL) 800-3,200 IU daily for up to 12 wk depending upon severity of the disease & the patient's response to treatment. Vit D insufficiency serum levels 25-50 nmol/L (10-20 ng/mL) 800-1,600 IU daily. Long-term maintenance therapy following treatment of deficiency 800-1,600 IU daily. Prevention of vit D deficiency 800-1,600 IU daily. Adjunct to specific therapy for osteoporosis 1 cap daily. Treatment of vit D deficiency 800-4,000 IU daily. Pregnancy & breast-feeding 800-4,000 IU daily. Childn over 12 yr Vit D deficiency or insufficiency 1 cap daily depending on the severity of the disease & the patient's response to treatment.
Hypersensitivity. Hypervitaminosis D; nephrolithiasis; diseases or conditions resulting in hypercalcaemia &/or hypercalciuria. Severe renal impairment.
Special Precautions
Risk of soft tissue calcification. Patients receiving treatment for CV disease. Patients suffering from sarcoidosis. Monitor Ca & phosphate levels; serum Ca values during long-term treatment w/ a daily dose >1,000 IU. Impaired renal function. Pregnancy & lactation. Not to be used in childn <12 yr.
Drug Interactions
Decreased effect w/ phenytoin, barbiturates, glucocorticoids. May accentuate the effects of digitalis & other cardiac glycosides. May reduce the GI absorption w/ ion exchange resins (eg, cholestyramine) or laxatives (eg, paraffin oil). Interfered activity w/ cytotoxic agent actinomycin & imidazole antifungal agents.
