Indications/Uses
Management of schizophrenia & treatment of moderate to severe mania associated w/ bipolar disorder.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Schizophrenia Initially 10 mg daily as single dose. Recommended dose: 5-10 mg daily. Acute mixed or manic episodes in bipolar disorder 10-15 mg daily. Rapid control of agitation & disturbed behavior in patient w/ schizophrenia or mania 5-10 mg followed by another 5-10 mg as required after 2 hr.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Risk of extrapyramidal effects including tardive dyskinesia. Neuroleptic malignant syndrome may occur. Pregnancy. Not to be used in lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Somnolence & wt gain; hyperprolactinemia; increased appetite, dizziness, fatigue; elevated plasma glucose, triglyceride & liver enzyme values; eosinophilia, edema, orthostatic hypotension; constipation & dry mouth.
Drug Interactions
Reduced blood conc w/ carbamazepine, omeprazole, rifampin & smoking. Increased blood levels w/ ciprofloxacin, diltiazem, erythromycin & fluvoxamine. Can exaggerate orthostatic hypotension w/ diazepam, other related benzodiazepines or alcohol.
