Acetylcysteine
Indications/Uses
Treatment of resp conditions associated w/ productive cough & thick viscous hypersecretion eg, acute & chronic bronchitis & its exacerbation, pulmonary emphysema, cystic fibrosis & bronchiectasis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Tab Adult 1 effervescent tab once daily preferably in the evening. Duration of treatment: 5-10 days for acute disorders; continue treatment for several mth for chronic disorders. Granules Adult & childn >14 yr 1 sachet once daily. Duration of treatment: Acute disorders: 5-10 days.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Dissolve tab/granule in ½ glass of water (250 mL for tab/100 mL for granule). Stir until soln clears. Consume entire drink.
Special Precautions
Increased vol of liquefied bronchial secretions may occur. Carefully observe asthmatics under treatment. Discontinue if bronchospasm occurs. Patients w/ history of PUD due to risk of GI hemorrhage. Sulfur-like odor (does not indicate an alteration of the product). Phenylketonurics.
Adverse Reactions
Hypersensitivity reactions including urticaria, pruritus, angioedema, bronchospasm, hypotension or HTN may occasionally occur. Headache, flushing, nausea, vomiting, fever, syncope, drowsiness, tinnitus, chills, sweating/clamminess, chest tightness, arthralgia, blurred vision, disturbances of liver function, acidosis, convulsions, bronchoconstriction, irritation to the trachea & bronchial tracts, & cardiac or resp arrest; hemoptysis, rhinorrhea & stomatitis.
Drug Interactions
Do not mix w/ other medicines.

R05CB01 - acetylcysteine ; Belongs to the class of mucolytics. Used in the treatment of wet cough.
