Indications/Uses
Fe overload in patients w/ thalassaemia for whom desferrioxamine is unsuitable.
Dosage/Direction for Use
25 mg/kg tid. Total daily dose of 75 mg/kg.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Take 1st dose in the morning, 2nd dose at midday, 3rd dose in the evening. Preferably take w/ meals to easily remember taking the medication.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. History of repeated episodes of neutropenia, agranulocytosis. Currently taking medications known to cause neutropenia or agranulocytosis. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Severe neutropenia or agranulocytosis. Perform WBC count wkly. Check for symptoms of infection eg, fever, sore throat or flu-like symptoms. Monitor body Fe load & perform liver biopsies.
Adverse Reactions
Joint pain & swelling. Increased liver enzymes, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting & increase in appetite. Reddish/brown urine discoloration.

V03AC02 - deferiprone ; Belongs to the class of iron chelating agents. Used in iron overload.
