Cefuroxime axetil
Indications/Uses
Treatment of susceptible infections including bone & joint infections, bronchitis (& other lower resp tract infections), gonorrhea, meningitis, otitis media, peritonitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis, skin & soft tissue infections, UTI. Surgical infection prophylaxis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Pneumonia or acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis 1.5 g or 750 mg IV bid, respectively followed by oral cefuroxime 500 mg bid in each case. Lyme disease 500 mg bid for 20 days. Uncomplicated gonorrhea 1 g as single dose + probenecid 1 g. Uncomplicated UTI 125 mg bid. Resp tract infections 250-500 mg bid. Childn >3 mth 125 mg bid or 10 mg/kg bid to a max of 250 mg daily. Childn >2 yr w/ otitis media 250 mg bid or 15 mg/kg bid to a max of 500 mg daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Renal impairment. Monitor renal & hematological status during prolonged & high-dose therapy. Consider diagnosis of pseudomembranous colitis in patients who develop serious diarrhea. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances including diarrhea, nausea & vomiting. Mild to moderate hearing loss in childn treated for meningitis.
Drug Interactions
Reduced renal clearance w/ probenecid.
