Concise Prescribing Info
Treatment of advanced prostate cancer in which suppression of testosterone effects is indicated: Initial treatment in combination w/ LH-RH analogue or in conjunction w/ orchiectomy (total blocking of androgen), & patients who are already being treated w/ LH-RH analogue or those who have undergone surgical removal of testes; patients who did not respond to other forms of endocrine treatment or for whom other endocrine treatment is not well tolerated but a necessity.
Dosage/Direction for Use
1 tab tid. Start treatment at least 3 days prior to initial administration of LH-RH analogue & continue the dose thereafter.
Should be taken with food: Swallow whole w/ small amount of fluid.
Hypersensitivity. May lead to elevated plasma testosterone, oestradiol levels & fluid retention. CV diseases. Assess risk-benefit ratio of long-term administration in patients w/ liver impairment. Discontinue if hypersensitivity, liver damage &/or jaundice occurs. Renal impairment.
Special Precautions
Check liver function prior to treatment & monitor regularly during long-term treatment. Perform sperm count regularly in patients who have not undergone medical or surgical castration. Use suitable contraceptive method during treatment.
Adverse Reactions
Monotherapy: Gynaecomastia &/or chest pain sometimes accompanied by galactorrhoea; micronodular changes in corpus mammae; reversible increase in serum testosterone, flushing & hair growth; diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, increased appetite, insomnia, tiredness, transient abnormal liver function & hepatitis. Combination therapy w/ LH-RH agonist: Hot flushes, decreased libido, impotence, diarrhoea, nausea & vomiting; hepatitis; hemolytic anaemia, macrocytic anaemia, methaemoglobinaemia, thromboembolism, photosensitivity reactions eg, erythema, ulcerations, bullous eruptions & epidermal necrolysis.
Drug Interactions
Prolonged prothrombin time w/ oral anticoagulants.
ATC Classification
L02BB01 - flutamide ; Belongs to the class of anti-androgens. Used in treatment of neoplastic diseases.
