Hypermagnesemia may occur, usually in patients with impaired renal function. Can reduce the absorption of drugs, such as ketoconazole, and possibly itraconazole, whose absorption is dependent on acid gastric pH. May occasionally cause constipation. Flatulence from released carbon dioxide may occur in some patients. Can cause hypercalcemia and alkalosis, particularly in patients with renal impairment or after high doses.
Magnesium Hydroxide may cause diarrhea. Hypermagnesemia may occur, usually in patients with impaired renal function. Calcium Carbonate may occasionally cause constipation.
Can cause Hypercalcemia, particularly in patients with renal impairment or after high doses. Famotidine is reported to have little or no anti-androgenic effect, although there are isolated reports of gynecomastia and impotence.
Interaction with many other drugs both by alterations in gastric pH and emptying and by formation of complexes that are not absorbed. Interactions can be minimized by giving the antacid and any other medications 2 to 3 hours apart. Famotidine does not inhibit cytochrome P450, and therefore is considered to have little effect on the metabolism of other drugs.
Store at temperatures not exceeding 30°C.
