Domperidone maleate
Indications/Uses
Short-term treatment of nausea & vomiting of various aetiologies. Prokinetic actions in dyspepsia & has been tried in diabetic gastroparesis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Nausea & vomiting Adult 10-20 mg every 6 hr. Elderly 10-20 mg every 6 hr. Symptomatic management of non-ulcer dyspepsia 10 mg qid.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Not to be used when GI stimulation might be dangerous eg, GI hemorrhage, obstruction, perforation or immediately after surgery. Neonates.
Special Precautions
Increased risk of extrapyramidal reactions in childn. Not recommended for chronic use or routine prophylaxis of post-op nausea & vomiting. May precipitate galactorrhea & improve postnatal lactation. Not recommended during pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Extrapyramidal reactions; hyperprolactinemia; galactorrhea, breast enlargement, soreness & reduced libido; dry mouth, thirst, headache, nervousness, drowsiness, diarrhea, skin rash, itch.
Drug Interactions
May reduce risk of hypoprolactinemic effect of bromocriptine. GI function may be antagonized by antimuscarinics & opioid analgesics.
