Somatropin
Indications/Uses
Long-term treatment of growth failure in childn, Turner syndrome, somatropin deficiency syndrome, childn small for gestational age (SGA) & idiopathic short stature & Prader-Willi syndrome.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IM 0.2 IU/kg/dose given 3 times/wk. SC 0.1 IU/kg once daily given before sleep, preferably in the abdominal area.
Contraindications
Patients w/ closed epiphysis. Evidence of tumor activity or neoplasia. Pregnancy. Elderly >60 yr.
Special Precautions
Change inj site regularly to prevent lipoatrophy. Take thyroid function test periodically. Patients w/ diabetes or glucose intolerance; insulin dose adjustments may be necessary. Growth hormone deficiency secondary to intracranial lesion progression or recurrence of the underlying disease process; chronic renal insufficiency. Slipped capital femoral epiphyses may occur. Renal transplant & allograft patients. Neonates w/ congenital hypopituitarism. Lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Leukemia, development of antibodies. Headache, localized muscle pain, arthralgia, carpal tunnel syndrome, weakness, mild hyperglycemia & glucosuria. Mild transient edema & local urticarial reactions at inj site.
