Glimepiride
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 1-2 mg daily. Maintenance: 4 mg daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take immediately before or during breakfast/1st main meal of the day. Do not skip meals. Swallow whole w/ sufficient amount of liqd, do not chew.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to glimepiride, other sulfonylureas or sulfonamides. Severe renal or hepatic impairment. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Exceptional stress situation (eg, trauma, surgery, febrile infections). Risk of hypoglycemia. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery.
Adverse Reactions
Hypoglycemia; temporary visual impairment; GI symptoms eg, nausea, vomiting, sensation of pressure or fullness in the epigastrium, abdominal pain & diarrhea; changes in blood picture; allergic or pseudoallergic reactions.
Drug Interactions
Diminished hypoglycemic effect w/ adrenaline, aminoglutethimide, chlorpromazine, corticosteroids, diazoxide, OCs, rifampicin & thiazide diuretics. Increased hypoglycemic effect w/ ACE inhibitors, alcohol, allopurinol, some analgesics (eg, azapropazone, phenylbutazone & salicylates), azole antifungal, chloramphenicol, cimetidine, clofibrate & related compd(s), coumarin, anticoagulants, heparin, MAOIs, octreotide, ranitidine, sulfinpyrazone, sulfonamides, tetracyclines, TCAs & thyroid hormones. Increased hypoglycaemia & to mask typical sympathetic warning signs. β-blockers. Ca channel blockers.
