Glimepiride
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Initially 1 mg or 2 mg once daily. Maintenance:1-4 mg once daily. Max: 6 mg once daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Preferably taken during breakfast or the 1st main meal.
Contraindications
Patients w/ ketoacidosis & in those w/ severe infection, stress, trauma & other severe conditions where it is unlikely to control hyperglycemia.
Special Precautions
Not to be used in IDDM. Hepatic & hematological monitoring. Not to be given during pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, heartburn, anorexia, diarrhea. Skin rashes, pruritus, photosensitivity. Altered liver enzyme values, cholestatic jaundice. Leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, aplastic anemia, agranulocytosis, hemolytic anemia, erythema multiforme, exfoliative dermatitis, erythema nosodum.
Drug Interactions
May diminish hypoglycaemic effects w/ epinephrine, aminoglutethimide, chlorpromazine, corticosteroids, diazoxide, OCs, rifamycins & thiazide diuretics. Increase hypoglycaemic effect w/ ACE inhibitors, alcohol, allopurinol, some analgesics (azapropazone, phenylbutazone & salicylates), azole antifungals (fluconazole, ketoconazole & miconazole), chloramphenicol, cimetidine, clofibrate & related compounds, coumarin anticoagulants, halofenate, heparin, MAOIs, octreotide, ranitidine, sulfinpyrazone, sulfonamides (including co-trimoxazole), tetracyclines, TCA & thyroid hormones; β-blockers.
