Contents
Carbonyl Fe 50 mg, Zn sulfate (equiv to elemental Zn 22.5 mg) 61.8 mg, folic acid 500 mcg
Indications/Uses
Fe deficiency anemia, other anemias eg, megaloblastic anemia (due to folic acid deficiency) & Zn deficiency especially during pregnancy. Prevention of neural tube birth defect.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Hemachromatosis & hemosiderosis.
Special Precautions
Folic acid doses >0.1 mg daily may mask pernicious anemia. Patients w/ elevated serum ferritin levels; chronic liver failure, alcoholic cirrhosis, chronic alcoholism & pancreatic insufficiency; history of gastritis, PUD or GI bleeding. Not be used w/ antacids. Childn.
Adverse Reactions
Rarely, allergic sensitization; difficulty of breathing, closing of the throat, swelling of the lips, tongue or face; hives; nausea, epigastric distress, diarrhea, constipation, black stools.
Drug Interactions
Folate deficiency w/ phenytoin, INH, primidone, barbiturates, OCs, ethanol, sulfasalazine, cycloserine, glutethimide, methotrexate, pyrimethamine, trimethoprim & triamterene. Zn interferes w/ captopril, tetracyclines, thiazide & K-sparing diuretics; decreases absorption & effectiveness of fluoroquinolones. Fe supplement may interact w/ acid pump inhibitors (lansoprazole, omeprazole, pantoprazole, rabeprazole), Al- or Mg-containing antacids, bisphosphonates (alendronate, etidronate, risedronate), H2 blockers (cimetidine, famotidine, nizatidine, ranitidine), penicillamine, quinolones (ciprofloxacin, gatifloxacin, levofloxacin, lomefloxacin, moxifloxacin, norfloxacin, ofloxacin, sparfloxacin, trovafloxacin).
