Ciprofloxacin HCl
Indications/Uses
Treatment of a wide variety of infections caused by gm +ve & gm -ve organisms.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Usual dose: 250-500 mg bid. Acute uncomplicated cystitis in women 100 mg bid. Gonorrhea 250-500 mg as a single dose. Meningococcal meningitis prophylaxis 500 mg single dose. Surgical infection prophylaxis 750 mg as a single dose given 60-90 min before the procedure. Acute exacerbations of cystic fibrosis w/ Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection Adolescent & childn ≥5 yr 20 mg/kg up to a max of 750 mg bid.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to minimise GI discomfort. Do not take w/ antacids, Fe or dairy products.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to quinolones.
Special Precautions
Epilepsy, hepatic or renal impairment. Ensure adequate fluid intake. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn & adolescents.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, sleep disorders, rash, pruritus, anaphylaxis, photosensitivity, increase in blood urea & creatinine, transient disturbances in liver enzymes & bilirubin, arthralgia & myalgia, blood disorders.
Drug Interactions
Mg, Al antacids & other cations, theophylline, rifampicin, chloramphenicol.
